Key Players to Watch

Jonah Neuenschwander

Center · 2027 Draft Eligible

Neuenschwander is one of Switzerland’s top young prospects for the 2027 WJC. He plays against senior players for Biel-Bienne in Switzerland’s National League. The 6-foot-3 center scored six points in four games at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August and has already played in the 2025 and 2026 World Juniors.

Lars Steiner

Right Wing · St. Louis Blues

Steiner is the team’s most experienced player and the only skater Switzerland has had drafted by an NHL team. St. Louis selected him 171st overall in 2026. He scored 30 goals in 44 games for Rouyn-Noranda in the QMJHL. Having played at the WJC in 2025 and 2026, he also earned top-three-player honors for Switzerland at the last tournament.

Guus Van der Kaaij

Defenseman · HC Davos

Van der Kaaij could play an important role in Switzerland’s young defense. He recorded 20 points in 58 QMJHL games for Rouyn-Noranda last season before returning to HC Davos in Switzerland. Born in Blaricum, Netherlands, he holds both Swiss and Dutch nationality.

Yanis Lutz

Forward · 2027 Draft Eligible

Lutz is another young prospect to watch ahead of the 2027 NHL Draft. The 2008-born forward plays in North America for the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. He recorded six points in five games at the U18 Division I-A tournament in April. His speed and attacking skills could help Switzerland create more scoring chances.

Fabrice Bouvard

Center / Left Wing · ZSC Lions

Bouvard is a young forward who can contribute at both ends of the ice. He led Switzerland’s forwards at the U18 Division I-A tournament, earning man-of-the-match honors with four goals and an assist against Slovenia. The 6-foot-2 forward developed in the ZSC Lions system and could provide useful depth in the middle of Switzerland’s lineup.

Nik Lehmann

Defenseman · SCL Tigers

Lehmann is a young defenseman with senior hockey experience. The 2007-born left-shot defenseman plays for the SCL Tigers in Switzerland’s National League. He also played for Switzerland’s U20 team last season. His experience could help strengthen the defensive group at the 2027 World Juniors.

Team Switzerland Strengths & Weaknesses

Team Switzerland 2027 strengths and weaknesses for the World Junior Championship

Strengths

  • Promising Young Talent: Neuenschwander, ranked seventh by Daily Faceoff, is a rare top-ten NHL draft prospect leading Switzerland.
  • World Juniors Experience: Lars Steiner brings two previous World Juniors appearances and a full QMJHL scoring resume to the top line.
  • Strong U18 Results: Switzerland’s 2008-born players come from a U18 team that won Division I-A gold and scored 30 goals in five games.
  • Good Size at Center: Neuenschwander, Schenk, and Mundy all bring size to the middle of the ice, which could help Switzerland compete physically.
  • Fewer NHL Release Concerns: No NHL release worries remain, since Steiner is the only drafted skater and plays in Switzerland.

Weaknesses

  • Major Changes on Defense: The entire 2026 top-four defense and all four goalies aged out. The blueline and crease are rebuilt from scratch.
  • Lack of Right-Shot Defensemen: All eight projected defensemen shoot left. The roster has no right-shot option.
  • Slow Start Under the New Coach: Five straight losses in July and August 2026, including 9-4 to Czechia.
  • Young Roster: The roster is very young, with several 17- and 18-year-olds in key roles.
  • Tough Opening Game: Switzerland starts against host nation Canada on December 26, a difficult test right away.
  • Limited Recent Medal Success: Five straight quarterfinals, zero medals since the 1998 bronze. The streak is alive, but the ceiling is unclear.

Switzerland at Previous World Juniors (History)

Switzerland won only one bronze medal at the 1998 Helsinki edition. They recently reached five straight quarterfinals but won no medals.

Prediction About the Switzerland Team in the 2027 edition

Switzerland’s tournament will be decided in the back-to-back that opens it. Canada is out of reach on Boxing Day, so the December 27 game against Norway is the season in one night. We predict Switzerland wins that game, handles Latvia on New Year’s Eve, and finishes third in Group B behind Canada and Czechia.

Conclusion

Team Switzerland enters the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship with promising young talent.  Luca Cereda is the head coach. Jonah Neuenschwander and Lars Steiner could lead the attack, but the team will also need strong defense and reliable goaltending. The official roster arrives in December.
